Many homes and commercial buildings have centralized lighting control systems that were installed 10, 15, 20, or more years ago. While the electrical infrastructure may still be in good condition, the control system itself may be obsolete, unsupported, difficult to service, or dependent on a single manufacturer.
A failed processor, dimming module, power supply, keypad, or proprietary communication component can turn what should be a relatively simple service issue into a major problem—particularly when replacement components are discontinued or programming software and technical support are no longer readily available.

Engineering Assessment & System Diagnostics
Every retrofit should begin with an understanding of the existing system. We can evaluate system architecture, control panels, processors, dimming and switching modules, keypads, sensors, interfaces, wiring, loads, fixtures, network infrastructure, and available system documentation.
When practical, we identify failed components and determine whether the existing system can be repaired or whether modernization represents a better long-term solution.
Legacy & Obsolete System Repair
Some older systems can continue operating reliably when the appropriate replacement components or engineering solutions are available. We can assist with troubleshooting existing installations, identifying defective components, evaluating replacement options, and developing practical repair strategies.
When original components are discontinued, we can evaluate compatible alternatives or determine whether a partial retrofit is technically and economically preferable.
Partial Lighting System Retrofit
An obsolete control system does not necessarily mean that the entire installation must be replaced.
Depending on the existing architecture and condition of the equipment, portions of the original installation—including electrical wiring, lighting circuits, fixtures, enclosures, control wiring, sensors, or other infrastructure—may potentially be retained.
Our engineering approach is to preserve useful infrastructure wherever technically appropriate while replacing components that have become obsolete, unreliable, unsupported, or unnecessarily restrictive.
Migration from Proprietary Systems to KNX
For projects requiring a more comprehensive modernization, IKNXUSA can develop a migration strategy from an aging single-vendor control platform to KNX open-standard building automation.
KNX can provide a common automation platform for lighting while also allowing integration with other building functions such as HVAC, motorized shades, occupancy sensing, visualization, energy management, DALI lighting, 0–10 V lighting, and other compatible technologies.
The objective is not simply to replace an old lighting controller with a new one. It is an opportunity to reconsider the building’s control architecture and create a system that is easier to expand, integrate, maintain, and modernize in the future.
Retrofit Engineering & System Design
Depending on the project, our services can include existing-system evaluation, documentation review, retrofit feasibility analysis, system architecture development, KNX topology design, equipment selection, control-panel design, integration planning, functional specifications, ETS engineering and programming, commissioning support, and coordination with the project’s electrical contractor, integrator, designer, or other professionals.
Repair, Retrofit or Replace?
There is no single answer that applies to every aging lighting system.
A relatively small repair may be all that is necessary. Another installation may benefit from replacing only selected components. In other cases, continued investment in an obsolete proprietary platform may no longer make financial or technical sense.
